No decrease for Cavan-Monaghan Social Housing lists – Smyth

Published on: 05 March 2019

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has expressed major disappointment that local authorities in Cavan and Monaghan are the only two across the country which did not see a decrease in their social housing waiting lists in 2018. The information was revealed by the Secretary General at the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government during a recent meeting of the Public Accounts Committee.

Deputy Smyth commented “It is clear a new approach is needed for Cavan-Monaghan. Every other local authority in the country has seen decreases aside from our two councils.

“While the focus of the housing crisis has been centered on Dublin the facts show the north west region requires just as much support as families and individuals anxiously await housing from our local authorities.

“We already have significant regional imbalance in our area, uncertainty as border counties ahead of Brexit, and now constituents awaiting social housing supports do not know when the list they are on may reduce. The Minister must make Cavan-Monaghan a priority, so we are not left behind,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
