Murphy O’Mahony furious that Lisheen’s House refused Section 39 funding

Cork South West TD, Margaret Murphy O’Mahony has said that she is furious that Lisheen’s House, a suicide prevention charity based in Skibbereen, has been refused Section 39 funding from the HSE.

Deputy Murphy O’Mahony was commenting after raising the issue directly with the Taoiseach during Promised Legislation in the Dáil this week.

The organisation provides vital supports to people dealing with mental health challenges in West Cork including counselling, a very successful Phone a Friend service, and also provides training and education to the wider community.

“There is great disappointment in the organisation and in the wider community that funding has not been approved. What is really annoying Lisheen’s House is that funding was supposed to be announced in March of this year, but organisations were only informed late last month.

“Essentially they have waited an additional seven months for this announcement only to be told they were unsuccessful.

“If the Government is truly serious about tackling mental health issues and rural isolation, they should start by providing funding for organisations such as Lisheen’s House who are on the coalface in West Cork,” concluded Murphy O’Mahony.
