Medical Card Cuts Another Appalling Betrayal – Kelleher

Published on: 15 October 2013

Fianna Fáil Health Spokesperson Billy Kelleher TD has slammed the move by Minister Reilly to restrict eligibility to the over 70s medical card, describing it as “the most shameless betrayal by one of the most shameless ministers to ever sit at Cabinet”.

“35,000 over 70’s have been betrayed by Minister Reilly. He is robbing grandparents so he can give free GP care to their grandchildren. It is utterly cynical and deplorable and sadly all too expected from this appalling Minister.”

He commented, “Five years ago when faced with more generous eligibility criteria then he is now proposing, Minister Reilly was a model of rage and resentment in his opposition. At the time he fumed, ‘those are the people who made this country what it is today … They raised us, nursed us when we were sick, protected us from violence, grew our food and ran a proud Civil Service.  This decision is morally wrong and the people of the country know it.’ Enda Kenny called it a ‘Judas response’.

“Well, today that has been exposed for the fraudulent cant that it was. Those at the cabinet table would do well to reflect on the words of the Taoiseach and take a long hard look at themselves.  This lame duck Minister who pledges universal healthcare for all is now curtailing it and introducing a major roll-back of healthcare for the over 70s.”
