Fianna Fáil South Dublin County Councillor and Dún Laoghaire General Election candidate, Cormac Devlin has warned swimmers to be safe this week as Ireland enjoys a rare spell of sunny weather.

He said, “The Forty Foot is an historic and gorgeous swimming area enjoyed by so many and that we are lucky to have on our doorstep.

“It is expected to reach above 25 degrees in some parts of the country today and which is likely to continue for the rest of this week. This spell of wonderful weather will make Dún Laoghaire’s Forty Foot a popular spot for swimming and enjoying the sun.

“As colleges finish up for the summer and exams get wrapped up, there will be large numbers of young people out and about in our area this week. The Gardaí have today also launched Operation Irene which aims to tackle anti-social behavior in locations such as the coastline.

“Particularly in light of yesterday evening’s incident, I encourage everyone to adhere to warnings signs and any instruction issued by the Dún Laoghaire Coast Guard and the 40ft Swimming Association, who work very hard to ensure people’s safety and enjoyment.

“I have had reports that the steps at the Forty Foot can be quite slippery so I urge swimmers to be careful as they can be quite dangerous.

He concluded, “We all have a responsibility to exert caution and pay attention for any hidden rocks and other swimmers so that everyone can bask in the sunshine without accident or injury.”
