Little Island mail centre closure a devastating blow for Cork – Murphy O’Mahony
27 June 2019
Fianna Fáil TD for Cork South West Margaret Murphy O’Mahony says the decision by An Post to close its Little Island mail centre is further evidence of the erosion of services outside of Dublin.
Workers were told late last night that operations would be winding up from September.
Deputy Murphy O’Mahony said, “This is devastating news for the workers and their families. We were all aware that a cost-cutting review was underway, but the Little Island mail sorting centre is the newest and most modern of all of An Post’s sorting centres so the decision to close it is baffling.
“This cost cutting review has seen communities across West Cork left without a post office and this latest announcement only serves to further erode services in the south. All of An Post’s mail sorting centres are now in Leinster, with the south losing out once again.
“My constituents still regularly contact my office to lament the loss of their local post office. Many are having to drive to other towns to access basic services, where once they could walk to the post office in their village, meet other people and get their business done.
“I believe that An Post has made the wrong decision in closing the Little Island mail sorting centre. It a huge blow for the workers and every effort should be made to ensure that they can be redeployed or trained in other areas so that they have the best change of retaining or securing other jobs”, concluded Deputy Murphy O’Mahony.
