Labour support for FG Seanad candidate = Labour support for FG stroke

Fianna Fáil Senator Thomas Byrne, who first raised concerns about the irregularities surrounding the appointment of John McNulty to the board of IMMA, has called on the Labour Party to assert some small measure of integrity and oppose the election of Mr McNulty to Seanad Éireann.

Senator Byrne commented, “It was with disbelief that I listened to and read this morning’s media reports that the Labour Party will now proceed to support Mr John McNulty’s candidacy for Seanad Éireann on the basis that ‘Government representatives vote for Government candidates’.

“Since I first raised this issue, the country has heard from a succession of Labour Party representatives, from their Leader down, wringing their hands and telling us that it was a terrible business and that they had serious concerns.  Only last evening, we were subjected to a Labour Party backbencher telling the Six One news how uncomfortable the whole episode has been and that the issue of who the Labour Party would support in the bye election was going to be debated at their parliamentary party meeting.

“Once again it appears that the Labour Party has wrestled with its conscience and has won the day.  Crocodile tears from Labour Party backbenchers mean absolutely nothing if they then proceed to support this candidate.  By doing so, they are signing off on a strategy that sets a new benchmark for political cynicism.  They are also confirming their ever diminishing capacity to hold Fine Gael to any sort of reasonable account.”
