Kelleher urges An Post to reverse decision to relocate Blackpool village Post Office
17 January 2013
Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North Central, Billy Kelleher TD, has called for An Post to reverse its decision to move their offices from Blackpool Village to Blackpool Shopping Centre.
A public meeting on the matter last Monday was attended by a huge crowd and Deputy Kelleher says An Post needs to listen to the people of Blackpool.
“The message is loud and clear from the people of Blackpool and the surrounding areas. The village needs the Post Office and the people of Blackpool need it. Blackpool Village has suffered greatly in recent years through dereliction and business moving to the Shopping Centre. There have also been huge efforts to regenerate the area and the Post Office has always been a central plank of that.
“Many elderly people in Blackpool depend on the Post Office and moving it to the shopping centre will put their independence at risk. Retailers also depend on footfall from customers using the Post Office, there will be a hugely negative effect if the village loses this amenity.
“Blackpool Shopping Centre would not depend on the Post Office, the village can’t survive without it. I am urging An Post to review this decision, if they were to meet with the residents of Blackpool they would soon learn of the significance of the Post Office and the important role it plays in people’s daily lives.
“It is not too late to change the decision, I hope An Post make the right move and keep the Post Office in the heart of Blackpool.”
