Gurteen Post Office should be saved for local community – Scanlon

Published on: 11 March 2019

Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Eamon Scanlon has raised the concerns of villagers in Gurteen, County Sligo who risk losing their post office.

Deputy Scanlon commented “The Taoiseach recently met a delegation from Gurteen who are campaigning to save their post office. He gave a commitment to the delegation that he would ask An Post officials to meet with them to try progress their cause. To date this has not materialised.

“We all know the importance of post offices in rural towns and villages. Yet, we have seen six closures of post offices in a ten-mile radius of Gurteen. The effects of Fine Gael policy are strangling rural Ireland.

“The Minister for Communications must step in to ensure the heart of this community is not wiped out,” concluded Deputy Scanlon.
