Government still can’t say when Housing Agency income eligibility review will be complete – O’Rourke

Published on: 13 May 2019

Fianna Fáil TD for Kildare North, Frank O’Rourke, has said it is shocking that the Government still cannot say when the review of income eligibility for social housing will be completed.

Deputy O’Rourke was commenting as the Minister for Housing; Planning and Local Government confirmed that the review was underway and will only be completed when the impacts of parallel initiatives, in terms of affordability and cost rental, have been considered.

He explained, “The review was commissioned in 2018, here we are five months into 2019 and there is no sign of it. Minister Damian English said recently that he hopes the report will be completed in the summer, but Minster Murphy isn’t giving any indication what-so-ever as to when we can expect it.

The Government are effectively condemning people to not being able to avail of social housing and at the same time those people have no chance whatsoever of being able to get a mortgage to buy their own home.

“This further demonstrates just how out of touch Fine Gael are when it comes to housing. This is one of the biggest issues facing a generation and yet the Government aren’t prioritising a review which would potentially make it more accessible for many people to purchase their own home”, he concluded.
