Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Dara Calleary has said the minimal expansion of the Garda numbers in County Mayo highlight a neglect of rural Ireland from Fine Gael. Figures from the Department of Justice show that 18 new Garda recruits were assigned to the Mayo Garda Division.
Deputy Calleary said “The figures show a continued tale of Fine Gael disregard for the western region. Under Fine Gael we have seen a downgrade of frontline services and closures of Garda stations. Now we see only 18 new Gardaí assigned to the county over a four-year period.
“In 2016 and 2018 no new recruits were assigned to the division. This is a damming reflection on Fine Gael’s approach to law and order.
“Many in rural Ireland, particularly older people, feel vulnerable. It does not help there is a depleted Garda presence in the area.
“I will be raising my concerns, and the concerns of my constituents, with the Minister for Justice to ensure adequate Garda resources are assigned to County Mayo,” concluded Deputy Calleary.
