Flu vaccine should be provided to staff in schools – Byrne

Published on: 06 January 2018

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Education Thomas Byrne TD has called for the flu vaccine to be provided free of charge to teachers, SNAs and ancillary staff in schools.

Deputy Byrne said, “I understand that it is not too late to administer the vaccine and that it may well be effective in protecting people against the spread of influenza.

“Principals have been in touch with me to say that they are extremely concerned about the flu outbreak as they return to school next week.  Staff suffering from the flu won’t be in school next week, understandably.  It will be almost impossible to get substitutes to cover their absences.  Principals are already hearing from sick staff.

“This is undoubtedly a health care issue but it threatens to have major impacts in the education system in the coming weeks.  I urge the Government to act now.   The cost of substitute teachers, if they can be got, would be vastly less than the cost of administrating this vaccine,” concluded Deputy Byrne.
