Fleming to Quiz Howlin on Croke Park Update

Published on: 26 February 2013

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Public Expenditure Sean Fleming TD has responded to publication of the full ‘LRC Proposals’ document for the update to the Croke Park Agreement.

Deputy Fleming commented, “While other parties have rushed to judgement on the new proposals to update Croke Park, Fianna Fáil have made it clear that we will examine the detail of what is being proposed before giving a view on its fairness.  We welcome the publication of the full document, but on first reading it appears to raise a series of very serious questions.

“Since the talks process ended, the Government has been on a fullscale PR offensive, seeking to undermine opponents and rely on bland assurances that the agreement is ‘fair and balanced’.  Now that we have the full document those assurances can be put to the test.

“Even on a cursory examination, a number of obvious questions jump out from the document.  For example, why is there no mention of service quality or the sustainability of public services?  Have the ‘targeted redundancies’ that we have heard the Government talking about in the past been taken off the table completely?  Why are graduate nurses being ignored?

“Tomorrow I have tabled priority questions on this agreement for my debate with Brendan Howlin in the Dáil.  The Labour Party may prefer that political parties do not engage in proper forensic debate about what is being proposed, but Fianna Fáil will not be obliging.”
