Fianna Fáil Housing Spokesperson Seamus McGrath TD has welcomed the Accelerating Infrastructure Taskforce Action Plan, published by Fianna Fáil Minister Jack Chambers, saying it represents a major step forward in delivering critical infrastructure across Ireland.
“This Action Plan is a practical and bold response to the delays that have held Ireland’s housing, energy, transport, and utility networks back for too long.” McGrath said.
The Action Plan introduces a new statutory framework allowing the Government to designate certain projects as being of strategic importance to the national interest. Projects such as energy grids, transport links, water systems, and other key networks will now be prioritised across planning, regulatory, and funding processes.
“By fast-tracking nationally important infrastructure, we can ensure the projects Ireland depends on, such as power, transport, and water, are delivered efficiently and without unnecessary delays,” said McGrath.
The framework also includes emergency powers for urgent or exceptional projects and a monitoring system to track progress and intervene where delays occur.
The Action Plan also introduces expanded planning exemptions for critical infrastructure. This will allow for more efficient delivery of both new facilities and expansion of existing facilities.
“Delays are not limited to the big projects. Too often, small but essential upgrades such as network connections, substation improvements, or water and broadband works get held up in planning queues,” said McGrath.
“These reforms cut unnecessary red tape so essential works can proceed at pace, supporting housing, energy security, communications, and transport across Ireland.”
Projects delivered under the new exemptions will be closely tracked and reported to ensure full transparency and accountability.
“Together, these reforms create a planning environment that is faster, clearer, and more predictable, exactly what Ireland needs to support housing delivery and long-term national development,” said McGrath.
The Action Plan is part of Fianna Fáil’s commitment to putting infrastructure delivery at the forefront of Government priorities, with a focus on scaling up investment in cities, towns, villages, and communities across the country.
