Fianna Fáil Leader Condemns Government Arrogance on Water Debate

Published on: 19 November 2014

Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has condemned the Government’s arrogance in today’s debate about the future of Irish Water and water charges, as the Environment Minister Alan Kelly walked out of the Dáil before Opposition Spokespeople responded to his motion on a new charging regime.  The entire Opposition withdrew from the House in protest.

Deputy Martin commented, “After the shambles that the Government has made of the entire Irish Water saga, it is quite simply beyond belief that the Minister responsible for the charges Alan Kelly and the Taoiseach who promised that his Government would be showing “humility” in the debate simply walked out of the Dáil before our Spokesperson had finished his short response and before any of the spokespeople of any other Opposition group had even begun to speak.

“The Government is in this mess for the simple reason that they have consistently refused to listen.  Today’s behaviour tells us that they have learned nothing”.
