Fianna Fáil Leader condemns Belfast shooting

Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has condemned the attempted murder of a PSNI officer in Belfast during a drive-by-shooting.

Deputy Martin said, “Tonight’s attempted murder of a PSNI officer is appalling and deeply shocking. I utterly condemn the attack and hope the perpetrators are brought to justice. I encourage anyone with information to bring it to the attention of the authorities.

“The initial reports suggest that this cowardly act was the work of so called dissident republicans. These people have no mandate and no support. Nonetheless it highlights that we must all remain vigilant.

“The PSNI have worked hard to engage with communities across the political divide over the last decade. Dissidents will not be allowed to undermine this good work through acts of violence. The PSNI and An Garda Síochána have built up a strong working relationship in recent years and I have no doubt that co-operation will be ongoing to bring these attackers to justice.

“I wish the officer a speedy recovery. My thoughts and prayers are with the officer, his family and colleagues at this difficult time.”
