European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) must be enhanced – Kelleher

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Business, Enterprise & Innovation and European Election candidate for Ireland South Billy Kelleher TD says he wants to see additional supports and resources made available to the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF).

OLAF is an independent office, which investigates fraud and illegal activity across the EU.

“The European Commission’s anti-fraud office plays a vital role in combatting illegal fraudulent activities. This has never been more important in Ireland as we face into an unknown Brexit and the potential for the return of cross-border smuggling. Businesses along the border will want to see strong deterrents put in place in post-Brexit to target any possible resurgence of smuggling”, said Deputy Kelleher.

“Fraud affects every member State in the EU and it is only through strong links between the authorities in each individual country that we can effectively tackle this scourge head on.

“We need to see all member State’s row in behind the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF). I believe we should look at increasing its budget and resources so that its ability to down on and investigate fraud, as well as other illegal activities, can be enhanced.

“It is in Ireland’s and the EU’s best interests to help ensure we are equipped to fight fraud”, concluded Deputy Kelleher.
