David McGuinness selected to contest Dublin West by-election for Fianna Fáil

Published on: 28 April 2014

The Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin has congratulated Cllr David McGuinness following the party’s Dublin West by-election selection convention this evening.

Deputy Martin said, “In David, Fianna Fáil has selected a strong candidate for this by-election, someone who is rooted in the community in Dublin West and who will be a committed advocate and constructive Dáil representative for the constituency.

“This is an extremely important election. Dublin West is a very diverse constituency and decisions taken by Fine Gael and Labour over the last three years have had a major impact on families. The unfair property tax, cuts to child benefit, cuts to medical cards and deeply cynical broken promises have disproportionately hit households across Dublin West. On top of all this, these families now face hundreds of euro in new water charges from January.

“Fianna Fáil has a strong team of candidates running in the local elections on May 23rd. We have an important mix of new candidates running alongside experienced Councillors with a track record of delivery for the communities across Fingal. The quality of these candidates demonstrates that the Fianna Fáil organisation in the area is strong, vibrant and leading the reform and growth needed to deliver for Dublin,” said Deputy Martin.

Following his selection as the Fianna Fáil candidate, Councillor McGuinness said, “I am delighted to have been selected by party members to contest this by-election. This is a constituency where too many people have borne the brunt of this Government’s deeply unfair policy agenda and it requires a TD who is prepared to stand up this agenda.

“I have worked hard as a councillor over the last few years to help improve my community and deliver for the people of Dublin West.  Over the coming weeks I look forward to making my case to the people of this constituency and demonstrate to them how I can build on that work and make a positive difference in Dáil Éireann.”
Deputy Martin concluded, “I want to take this opportunity to thank Anita Lenihan and Edward McManus who also contested the convention tonight. Both are extremely dedicated members of the party and I wish them every success. Their continued support for David McGuinness in this by-election will be very important in the weeks ahead.”
