Cowen stresses importance of Sports Capital Grants to local communities

Offaly Fianna Fáil TD Barry Cowen has said the Sports Capital Programme is of great importance to local communities and provides essential amenities for young people in particular.

He was commenting amid speculation that a list of successful grants is due to be announced shortly.

Deputy Cowen said: “I have continued to make representations on behalf of groups, voluntary organisations and community projects who are seeking funding under the Sports Capital Programme as I have been led to believe an announcement is due shortly.  Investment in communities through the programme has been hugely successful and been of great benefit to towns in Offaly and across the country for many years.

“I know from working with groups locally that this funding is extremely important to groups and helps improve sports clubs and other facilities which are of huge benefit to teenagers and clubs in the county.  I think it’s extremely important that this government builds on years of investment in communities, facilities and sports equipment for clubs and groups across Offaly.

“I will continue to make representations on behalf of groups bidding for these much needed funds and encourage the government to recognise the importance this funding has had locally and can continue to have for young people.”
