Cowen calls for reinstatement of Motorised Transport Grant

Fianna Fáil TD for Offaly Barry Cowen is calling on the Government to reintroduce the Motorised Transport Grant following its abolition in 2013.

The grant provides funding for people with disabilities who need to buy a car in order to retain employment. Disability support groups were highly critical of Fine Gael when the grant was axed in 2013.

Deputy Cowen commented, “The last Fine Gael Government axed the Motorised Transport Grant back in 2013. They insisted at the time that a new scheme would be introduced without delay but this still hasn’t happened. In light of this I’ve written to Minister of State with Responsibility for Disability Finian McGrath to ask him to re-introduce the allowance.

“This allowance is a vital support which helps people with a disability to keep active and remain in the workforce. It also allows people with a disability to adapt a car to enable them to drive and earn a living as a result. It’s an important support which should be reinstated. This is something which I will continue to pursue with the Government,” said Deputy Cowen.
