– Downgrading of Portlaoise Hospital will impact on Tullamore –
Fianna Fáil TD for Offaly Barry Cowen has called on the Government to allocate additional resources to Tullamore Hospital. Deputy Cowen made the calls following the Government announcement that certain services at the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise are to be withdrawn over the coming months.

Deputy Cowen commented, “In recent weeks the Government has signalled that services at Portlaoise hospital are to be withdrawn. As a result of the Government decision the A&E department at Portlaoise is set to close its doors for at least twelve hours a day.

“Past experience shows us that these service reductions will undoubtedly have an impact on Tullamore hospital. Demand for the A&E department in Tullamore will rise significantly when the Government decision is implemented and there will be further pressure placed on in-patient and out-patient services.

“In light of this the Government needs to deploy additional resources, particularly in the area of staffing, to Tullamore hospital. These additional resources need to be allocated without delay in order to ensure Tullamore hospital can cope with the increased demand.

“The people of Offaly should not be expected to forfeit the quality of their health service on account of the Government decision to decimate services at Portlaoise” said Deputy Cowen.
