Cootehill jobs threat a major blow to Cavan-Monaghan – Smith

Published on: 24 October 2012

The loss of 90 jobs at Co-operative Poultry Products in Co Cavan is a major blow to Cootehill and the Cavan-Monaghan area, according to local Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith.

“I want to pledge my full support for the 90 employees and 28 local suppliers who are badly affected by this news.  This is an extremely difficult and distressing time for them and everything must be done to ensure that they receive fair and appropriate redundancy terms,” said Deputy Smith.

“Cootehill Co-Operative is a long-established facility that has provided valued employment in the area as well as providing business for local suppliers. The loss of this business will certainly have an impact on the local economy.  It is a further example of the need for greater supports for small and medium enterprise in communities across this region, so that they can keep their businesses going and create jobs into the future.

“Everything must be done to support the workers at Cootehill Cooperative during this difficult time. I have contacted Enterprise Ireland to request that all possible measures are taken to protect employment in this valuable industry,” said Deputy Smith.
