Fianna Fáil Senator and Dublin Spokesperson, Mary Fitzpatrick, warmly welcomes the announcement of the Moore Street project to commemorate the 1916 Rising will progress to tender stage and construction.

The development was approved this morning by Minister for Housing for the development of a 1916 Commemorative Centre at 14-17 Moore Street to the main construction tender stage and to the preferred contractor.

Funding has been set aside for the project which will be carried out by the OPW.

Senator Fitzpatrick is delighted of this ‘really positive progression’ and says the possibility of the history of the street be captured in the Commemorative Centre will be fantastic.

“I am delighted this morning to be informed that Minister James Browne that he has approved the development of a Commemorative Centre at Moore Street and the use of the space to the rear of the Monument, at 8-9 Moore Lane, for the creation of a complementary visitor and cultural venue.

She added:

“I have banged this drum for over 20 years, and I now look forward to the contract being awarded and for construction to commence as soon as possible,” she said. “These buildings of 14-17 Moore Street are steeped in deep history. It was te last meeting place of the leaders of 1916 and where they ultimately decided to surrender.

Concluding Senator Fitzpatrick said:

“I am pleased with the immediate programme targets of the approval to go to tender for construction estimated for quarter two of 2026, and the target to appoint a contractor to start onsite estimated for end of quarter 3, or the start of quarter 4 2026.

“This marks a really positive step in the delivery of this Commemorative Centre and complementary visitor and cultural venue for the people of Ireland and beyond. Contrary to the opposition’s opinion that this would never happen, Fianna Fáil is delivering on this project.
