Chambers encourages people to shop local this Christmas
04 December 2018
Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Lisa Chambers is asking people across the county to try and do their Christmas shopping at home this year and help boost the local economy.
Deputy Chambers explained, “The vast majority of small businesses depend on this time of year for their survival. The weeks leading up to Christmas are usually the busiest of the year and if shoppers spend their money locally they are keeping smaller companies and artisan producers in business.
“We are very lucky here in Mayo because we have a lot of high quality local producers – everything from food, to hand crafts to furniture. By supporting local businesses, we’re keeping money in the local economy and ensuring a future for our local community.
“I understand that online shopping is hassle free, and in some cases it’s cheaper, but ultimately it is having a seriously detrimental effect on our local shop owners, producers and craftspeople. I would hate to see the hustle and bustle of Christmas in town lost – it’s this atmosphere that so many people look forward to every year. People who come into their local town to shop often end up meeting up with friends and family for a cup of coffee or a drink – it’s a social occasion as much as it is a shopping outing.
“When we take the time to look, there is absolutely no shortage of creativity and innovation in towns and villages across Mayo. There are so many quirky, unique shops on our doorstep that have wonderful, unusual gifts on sale at reasonable prices this Christmas.
“The economy may be recovering but local traders and enterprises still need us to support them and Christmas provides the perfect opportunity for us to do that”.
