Written by David Lynch | 17 June 2022

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Brendan Smith has reminded people of a public consultation seeking their views on the issue of Parental Alienation.

Deputy Smith said: “The consultation is being carried out by the Minister for Justice and the deadline for submissions is on Friday of next week

“There was a recommendation made in the Report of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice and Equality on Reform of the Family Law System that consideration be given to whether laws should be changed to take account of circumstances where one parent is wrongfully influencing their child or children against the other parent, thereby creating prejudicial and unjustified alienation that can be damaging and long lasting.”

“The Department of Justice has commissioned research in relation to this that will align with the public consultation.

The consultation is particularly seeking

  • Views of and/or experiences of Parental Alienation

  • The impact of Parental Alienation

  • How Parental Alienation could be best responded to in the future.

Deputy Smith added: “I urge all those with an interest in this issue to make their voice heard.”
