Albert Dolan TD has welcomed today’s announcement by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless TD, confirming a €65.8 million Targeted Enhancement Fund (TEF) for the technological sector and specialist colleges, with Atlantic Technological University (ATU) securing €10.5 million, the largest allocation under the programme.

Deputy Dolan said the investment represents “a major and timely boost for Galway and the wider Western region”, strengthening the role of ATU as a driver of skills, innovation, and regional development.

“This is extremely positive news for the West,” Deputy Dolan said. “ATU plays a central role in supporting students, industry, and communities across Galway, Mayo, Sligo, and Donegal. Today’s €10.5 million allocation will accelerate ATU’s growth, enhance student supports, and ensure the University is equipped to meet future challenges, from digital transformation to climate action. This type of targeted investment is precisely what our region needs to unlock its full potential.”

The Targeted Enhancement Fund will support projects beginning in January 2026 and operating over three years. Funding will help institutions to:

  • Advance digital transformation, cybersecurity, and AI preparedness
  • Expand professional development and leadership opportunities for staff
  • Strengthen student retention, skills development, and support services
  • Enhance academic integrity, assessment innovation, and transitions into higher education
  • Progress regional engagement and industry collaboration
  • Deliver on climate action targets and sustainability initiatives

Deputy Dolan highlighted that the TEF will also support the long-term development of Technological Universities, including preparations for the introduction of Professorial grades, bringing TUs fully in line with established universities.

“This funding will give ATU the tools it needs to grow research capacity, deepen its partnerships with local enterprise, and expand opportunities for students across the West,” he said. “It reinforces government commitment to balanced regional development and ensures that students can learn, live, and work in their own region.”

Deputy Dolan concluded by commending the Minister and the Higher Education Authority for recognising the strategic importance of the West’s only Technological University.

“This investment will pay dividends for years to come. It strengthens ATU, strengthens Galway, and strengthens the entire Western region.”
