Local TD, Margaret Murphy O’Mahony has called on West Cork residents to keep an eye out for unscrupulous salespeople targeting vulnerable older people.
Deputy Murphy O’Mahony was commenting after it emerged that an elderly woman in Bantry was harassed and scammed into purchasing 12 chainsaws, 11 generators, seven power washers and other tools.
“This is a scandalous situation, and while much of the money was recovered, it underscores the need to be vigilant about door to door sales people.
“I am calling on people to check in on their elderly neighbours, especially those who are living on their own, and to elderly people, I would advise them never to hand over money or cheques without running it past a family member or neighbour.
“It’s a shocking state of affairs that people who target and, let’s call a spade a spade, abuse older people in this way.
“I have written to the local Garda Chief Superintendent requesting an increase in patrols in the area to help deter would be scammers. This type of behaviour cannot be tolerated,” concluded Murphy O’Mahony.
