Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon-Galway, Eugene Murphy, has expressed his disappointment at job losses announced at Lanesboro and Shannonbridge Power Stations.
Deputy Murphy commented, “Today’s news is a massive blow to communities in the Midlands. Lanesboro and Shannonbridge are big local employers. We are so close to Christmas with many families facing an uncertain future following this morning’s announcement.
“There is a lot of anger among the community. The announcement comes as a surprise to employees at the plants. It was understood some other uses for the plants were considered, however the ESB has changed its approach. There has been a rapid acceleration in the future of the plants as we now face closure.
“I entirely support the aims to reduce our carbon footprint and take positive actions to tackle climate change. These aims need to be done in conjunction with local communities and afford them time and support to adapt. This has not been afforded to employees at both plants.
“Support for staff let go in the shape of social protection support, and guidance in seeking new employment opportunities should be provided.
“It is hard to believe a closure like this would come without any prior consultation with the government. I intend to raise this in the Dáil at the first opportunity,” concluded Deputy Murphy.
