Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Lisa Chambers has welcomed the latest funding announcement for Ireland West Airport Knock but says more substantial investment is needed to realise its potential.  Today’s allocation of €1.3m will be used for safety projects such as runway lighting, drainage and CCTV runway protection.

Deputy Chambers commented, “This latest funding announcement is welcome but it is nowhere near the figure of €35m which is required under the airport’s capital plan.  Over the past five years we’ve had token announcements from Fine Gael Ministers but no substantial investment.  This is simply not good enough.

“Not only does Ireland West Airport Knock employ more than 100 people, it is a major economic driver bringing thousands of passengers into Mayo and surrounding counties.  However, under Fine Gael, the airport’s potential is being completely ignored.

“Earlier this year seven local authorities committed €10m in funding to the airport over the next five years, with Mayo County Council contributing the largest share.  The Government should be more willing to invest in this important regional and national asset but unfortunately seems unwilling to do so.  The €1.3m announcement, while welcome, falls far short of what is needed for the airport to realise its capital plan and full potential”.
