Minister will not release statistics on homelessness – McAuliffe
Fianna Fáil candidate for Dublin North-West Cllr Paul McAuliffe maintains that Minister Alan Kelly is deliberately withholding the latest statistics on homeless levels in Dublin.
“The Minister will not release routine monthly homeless statistics until they have been vetted by cabinet.
“The Minister very belatedly released figures for November and December, traditionally there is a spike in homelessness in January and February, which Alan Kelly clearly wants to conceal during the election.
“This refusal to release routine statistics on housing need is emblematic of the nontransparent, deceitful manner in which Alan Kelly has run the Department of Environment,” added Cllr McAuliffe.
When questioned about homeless figures in a PQ recently Minister Alan Kelly said that the ‘normal’ procedure within his department is to publish the monthly figures on the Department’s website ‘when they have been noted by the Cabinet Committee.’
“Why is there a delay in publishing the most recent figures?” asked Cllr McAuliffe. “According to the Simon Community’s Election 2016 report the number of people in emergency accommodation increased by 40% when compared to 2014. The number of families increased by 90% and the number of children increased by 84%.
“The Simon Community’s report also points out that the latest figures have not been released by the Dept of the Environment.
“The truth about the very serious crisis being faced by thousands of families needs to be highlighted. It is sinister that the Minister is not releasing these figures and once again this displays the level of cynicism with which he regards the very real dilemma facing these families,” added Cllr McAuliffe.
