Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Niamh Smyth, says the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs should take a second look at the provision of a Family Resource Centre in Cootehill. An application for a resource centre in Cootehill was turned down by TUSLA in 2018.

Deputy Smyth commented, “I have asked the Minister to revisit the request for Cootehill to be included in the Family Resource Centre Programme. In 2018 I supported an application for this but, while the area was chosen, we were not successful in becoming one of the final 11 new centres approved.

“Services are provided to families and children on outreach and home visiting programmes as an alternative to a family resource centre. This is a valuable and important service but I do believe we need to see a step up in resources provided to families in the area. A standalone centre for these services to be based is required.

“I am calling on the Minister to revisit the programme. Any consideration of new centres should give priority to those locations which were chosen in 2018 but not progressed in the final 11 centres,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
