Fianna Fáil’s Agriculture Spokesperson Charlie McConalogue says the successful passing of of a Dáil motion to establish a crisis aid fund for tillage farmers, warrants the immediate convening of the National Tillage Forum.
The Fianna Fáil motion received widespread backing from TDs in the House this afternoon.
Deputy McConalogue commented, “We brought forward this motion for a compensation fund for tillage farmers whose crops were affected by the severe weather last year, in full knowledge of the hardship that farmers are facing. The support we received, both inside and outside the Dáil clearly shows the seriousness of the issue and it now appears that Minister Creed and his Fine Gael colleagues are the only people who have not woken up to the crisis.
“On foot of the passing of this motion, I am calling on the Minister to immediately convene a meeting of the National Tillage Forum with stakeholders to implement a rescue package.
“The ball is firmly in the Minister’s court. He cannot continue to take a hands-off approach when farmers’ livelihoods remain in the balance”.
