Fianna Fáil Galway West TD, Éamon Ó Cuív, says that under the recent allocation of €42 million worth of projects across the various Local Development Companies for LEADER activities, a number of companies operating in Galway have received funding.
Comhar na nOileán Teoranta, which operates on the off-shore islands and in the Gaeltacht in Connemara received €1,061,530. FORUM Connemara Ltd which operates in the non-Gaeltacht area of Connemara will receive €1,260,490 and Galway Rural Development has been granted €432,798.
Deputy Ó Cuív commented: “While I welcome this allocation as moving the LEADER process forward, it is very important that the Minister allocates the almost €60 million left in the fund as speedily as possible, to allow LEADER projects to get off the ground.
“The delay in the LEADER Programme this year is inexcusable, as it is now imperative that as many projects as possible will be approved for delivery immediately. In particular, projects with a time limit on them will be given the go-ahead.”
Forum Connemara has approved projects to the value of €2.8 million and the actual expenditure to-date is €1.9 million, while Galway Rural Development has approved projects worth €7.3 million and the actual expenditure to-date is €4.6 million. Meitheal Forbartha na Gaeltachta has approved projects to-date worth €4.16m, which a project expenditure to-date of €1.9m.
“The reason for the small project expenditure in Meitheal Forbartha na Gaeltachta is due to the fact that the company was liquidated. It is absolutely imperative now that all outstanding liabilities of Meitheal Forbartha na Gaeltachta be cleared in the near future and I have been pressing the Minister in this regard,” Deputy Ó Cuív concluded.
