Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West Éamon Ó Cuív has called on the Transport Minister to ensure that funding is made available for works to modernise the level crossing network on the main Galway to Athenry line.
Deputy Ó Cuív commented, “I have been informed by Iarnród Éireann that they are looking at ways to upgrade the level crossing system, particularly at junctions which do not have automatic gates and depend on the user opening and closing the gates themselves.
“I have raised concerns about the crossing on the public road at Mountain West, Derrydonnell, Oranmore, which is experiencing increased traffic volumes as a result of additional trains on the Limerick line. I am extremely pleased that Iarnród Éireann is now examining technical and logistical solutions to try and resolve these issues, and management have confirmed that the Derrydonnell crossing is listed for inclusion in the review. However there are concerns about how the work will be funded.
“Minister Paschal Donohoe must ensure that money is made available to carry out this important upgrade work. The current situation whereby members of the public are opening and closing level crossings is extremely unsafe and must be improved. I hope to see these gates automated in the near future and I would urge the Minister to prioritise funding for this project without delay”.
