Fianna Fáil TD for Meath East Thomas Byrne has welcomed the report published by Meath County Council regarding the recent multi-million euro cyber fraud at the local authority.

However Deputy Byrne added that Meath County Council needs to provide an assurance that no essential public services will be affected as a result of the fraud.

Deputy Byrne said, “The details provided by Meath County Council today provide welcome transparency. However, I am still looking for reassurances that no essential public services are being affected and I am still concerned that there doesn’t seem to be a specific indication that the outcome will be positive for the council.

“I welcome the fact the PWC will be carrying out a review of the Council’s internal controls.

“Finally, while it is perfectly understandable that the Council maintained absolute confidentiality before the first court order was granted on 15th December, at this point the Council will be involved in a legal process and I have no doubt that the public will continue to be kept informed,” concluded Deputy Byrne.
