Local Fianna Fáil TD Michael McGrath has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Education that a new post-primary school is to be built in Carrigaline.
The new school is one of forty primary and post-primary schools that will be established around the country between 2012 and 2017.
‘Cork County VEC has been working with a local voluntary committee in Carrigaline for some time on plans to develop a new Gaelcholáiste in Carrigaline. In a very significant step forward, a 21-acre site has been purchased for the development of an education campus, to include the new post-primary school.
‘The Minister has also announced the establishment of a New Schools Establishment Group which will advise him on the patronage of the new schools. Therefore, prospective patrons will have to apply for the Department in respect of the planned new second-level school in Carrigaline.
‘The approval by the Department of the purchase of this site is major step forward towards the development of a Gaelcholáiste in Carrigaline. The Department has not at this stage made a decision that the new post-primary school will be a Gaelcholáiste. However, given the amount of preparatory and research work that has already been completed at a local level, the case for a Gaelcholáiste is very strong.
‘Obviously, the local community will have to be fully consulted of the proposed development of a new second-level school. It is important now that a detailed plan, including a timeline, for the development of the education campus is prepared and made available for all stakeholders to consider.
‘I look forward to continuing to work with others on this exciting project for Carrigaline,’ stated Deputy McGrath.
