Donegal North East Fianna Fáil TD Charlie McConalogue has called on the Minister for Health Dr James Reilly to use his visit to Letterkenny General Hospital to commit to designating Letterkenny as Regional Hospital.  Deputy McConalogue’s comments come as Minister Reilly meets hospital management in Letterkenny today.

Deputy McConalogue, a member of the Oireachtas Health Committee, said: “I raised a number of issues with Minister Reilly during last week’s meeting of the Health Committee relating to the problems facing Letterkenny Hospital. I questioned him about our shortage of junior doctors and the Minister’s own hard-line stance on significant budget cuts at Letterkenny Hospital this year.

“The Minister indicated at the committee meeting that he is considering designating Letterkenny General Hospital as a Regional Hospital. This would greatly enhance the hospital’s potential to raise extra revenue. The move would not eradicate the budget overspend which is expected to reach €9 million by the end of the year. However, it would certainly place Letterkenny Hospital on a level playing field with other similar sized hospitals in terms of workload and budget.”
