Fianna Fáil TD for Donegal Charlie McConalogue has welcomed the appointment of a third rheumatologist for the North West region. Deputy McConalogue has called on the Health Minister and Saolta Hospital Group to set an immediate date for the reinstatement of rheumatology services in Donegal.
Deputy McConalogue commented, “Almost 300 Donegal patients have had to travel to Manorhamilton for rheumatology services for nearly five years now. This is totally unfair and simply unacceptable, and I have raised their plight in the Dáil on a number of occasions.
“Earlier this year the Saolta Hospital Group gave me assurances that a third consultant rheumatologist would be appointed to Letterkenny University Hospital by the end of September, with a full review of the configuration of rheumatology services in the region to follow. I welcome that fact that that consultant has now been appointed and I am seeking the immediate reinstatement of clinic services to Letterkenny University Hospital.
“I’m calling on the Health Minister Simon Harris and the Saolta Group to immediately progress the arrangements on a service model for Donegal rheumatology services. I have raised the need for immediate action on this with both the Minister and Saolta and I am hopeful that confirmation will be forthcoming on the recommencement of services in Letterkenny.”
