Donegal North East Fianna Fail Deputy Charlie McConalogue has expressed his outrage at fresh proposals for targeted cuts to people with special needs in Inishowen.
The HSE has announced plans to reduce services from five days to three days at three centres for people special needs in Buncrana, Carndonagh and Moville.
Deputy McConalogue commented, “Families were left in a state of shock last night after they were informed of this proposal at a meeting in Cashel na Cor, Buncrana. I have spoken to a number of those affected and they are hurt and extremely angry at a decision that once again targets the most vulnerable people in this area.
“These day services play a vital role in the day-to-day lives of the young people with special needs. At these centres, they can engage in meaningful activities that address their difficulties and their carers are given some level of respite
“The proposed cuts would represent a blatant neglect of the most vulnerable families within our community. I, along with the Fianna Fail Councillors in Inishowen, will take this issue up with the Minister for Health James Reilly and HSE management immediately. The people of Inishowen will not accept these appalling cuts to vital services for special needs. I will work with them to ensure their voices are heard and fight to retain these services.”
