Mayor of Limerick, Cllr. James Collins congratulates Martina McMahon and Padraig Quish on their respective victories at the World Handball Championships in Minnesota, USA.

Cllr. Collins was commenting after Broadford’s Martina McMahon won the World WallBall (One Wall) Women’s Open Singles final against the USA’s Danielle Daskalakias and Hospital’s Padraig Quish won the 23&Under Men’s Wallball (One Wall) title against Ben Devlin from Louth.

“For sometime, Martina has been one of Limerick’s finest sportspeople. Having recently won her first All Ireland Senior crown, Martina went into these World Championships confident and rightly so.

“Coming up against two time and defending World Champion, Danielle Daskalakias (USA), Martina demonstrated why she is one of Ireland’s top athletes.

“Going into the tiebreaker, Martina dominated the last game to claim her first Open World title.”

“Padraig has made WallBall his own and is now one of the country’s leading exponents. A regular competitor on the European WallBall tour, Padraig will, I know, now set his sights on winning Open titles at home and abroad in the future.”

“As a county, we need to recognise the achievements  of Martina and our other world beater, Padraig Quish. As Mayor, I am determined that they, like other Limerick sports stars, get the recognition they deserve,” concluded Cllr. Collins.
