Bandon Town Mayor and member of the National Executive of Fianna Fáil, Cllr Gillian Coughlan, has called on the IDA to take immediate action for the 90 employees who are set to lose their jobs at the MSD Facility, based at Brinny, Co Cork.

Mayor Coughlan said she was shocked to learn of the impending redundancies from one of the most important employers in the locality, with a current workforce of 450 employees.

Mayor Coughlan commented: “With many of the employees living in the Bandon area, our thoughts are with the workers and their families as they face into an uncertain future.

“It is certainly a worrying time for many of those who are set to lose their jobs and it’s critical that an action plan is put in place immediately.

“In addition to the direct loss of employment, the recent announcement will impact indirectly on the local economy.

“I will be calling on my party colleagues in the Dáil to raise the issue as a matter of urgency as well as calling on the IDA to do all in its power to ensure that those made redundant find alternative employment as quickly as possible.”

Mayor Coughlan is set to table a motion at the next meeting of Bandon Town Council calling on the IDA to develop a strategic plan to attract direct investment to the town.
