Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has welcomed the sale of Whitegate Oil Refinery to Irving Oil, and says months of uncertainty for workers and their families has now been brought to an end.
Deputy Martin said, “This news is a welcome development and will be greeted with relief by workers and their families. Irving Oil has significant experience in the oil refining industry which should lead to further development at Whitegate in the years ahead.
“I’ve long argued that Whitegate is a key strategic asset. It provides one third of all our transportation fuel and is a long-term principle supplier to the National Oil Reserves Agency. Serious concerns were raised in recent months that the facility could be in danger should a suitable buyer not be found. Thankfully this danger has now been averted.
“Whitegate Refinery has played a key role in supporting employment in Cork down through the decades. It has supported hundreds of jobs both directly and indirectly. It’s positive to see Irving Oil committing to the future of the facility. The refinery has huge potential to continue to support local jobs and industry for many years to come,” concluded Deputy Martin.
