Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD described the Chernobyl nuclear disaster 25 years ago today as a terrible tragedy, the legacy of which remains with the people of Belarus and all those in Ireland and around the world who have worked to help victims of its enduring impact.
“Today the world marks the 25th anniversary of the most damaging nuclear accident in the history of nuclear technology. 60% of the radiation fallout is said to have landed in Belarus and caused the evacuation of thousands of people. The people of Belarus have a special place in the hearts and minds of the Irish people and for many in Ireland today will be one of reflection. For years Irish people have been opening their hearts and their homes to the children of Belarus, ensuring they benefit from a healthy environment.”
“For many people the Chernobyl disaster is fresh in their minds and most will find it hard to believe it is 25 years ago and that its impact endures today. The contribution of Irish people to the lives of many people from Belarus is enormous and I know that so many people from Chernobyl feel a special and deep connection with Ireland. Last week President McAleese held a special commemorative event in the Phoenix Park to honour the Chernobyl Children International Top 25 Volunteers, alongside CCI chief executive Adi Roche. I want to pay tribute to Adi, to all volunteers and to the families who have opened their homes to the children of Belarus over many years.
“25 years on from this tragedy I believe it is only appropriate that Ireland takes the opportunity to mark the Chernobyl disaster in a way that befits its impact there, the contribution of the Irish people to survivors of that tragedy and indeed the impact and contribution of the children of Belarus on many families across Ireland. In that context I will be writing to the incoming Chairperson of the all-party committee dealing with Community Affairs, encouraging the committee to examine options for marking the Chernobyl disaster going forward, honouring those who died and those who suffer as a result of the nuclear accident.”
