Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin has congratulated Councillor David McGuinness following the Dublin West bye-election selection convention.

Mr Martin said: “I was very pleased to be present this evening for the nomination of David McGuinness to contest the upcoming bye-election arising from the sad passing of the late Brian Lenihan.  David is a young, sincere and committed representative, who will make an extremely strong candidate.  Fianna Fáil will put forward a vigorous campaign right up to polling day on October 27th. Brian Lenihan and Fianna Fáil have a proud record in the service of the people of Dublin West.  We are fighting to win this seat and continue that service.”

Speaking following his nomination as a candidate for the bye-election on October 27th Cllr McGuinness said: “I am delighted to have been selected to contest the forthcoming bye-election.  I am in politics because I want to make my community a better place to live.  I will fight a positive election campaign drawing on my experience in local education and my knowledge of the challenges being faced by the many diverse communities within the constituency.”

Mr. Martin concluded: “I would also like to thank the other four candidates who came forward to convention this evening, Edward Mac Manus, Brenda Clifford, Michael Gilvarry and Mary Martin.  The quality of these candidates show that the Fianna Fáil organisation in this area is strong, vibrant and will be to the forefront in leading the party’s renewal in the capital.”
