Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has strongly condemned the murder of a Prison Officer in County Armagh earlier today.
Deputy Martin commented, “My first thoughts are with the family of the prison officer killed today. Tonight, another family in Northern Ireland will have to begin to come to terms with the tragedy of a loved one who stood up for public service being cut down by wicked men with nothing positive to offer their country.
“The PSNI must get the full support they need from throughout the community to find, catch and punish those responsible. I know also that the Gardai will work closely with the PSNI if there is any assistance they can offer.
“This morning’s tragic news is another brutal reminder of the need for vigilance and continued focus on building and nurturing the progress that has been hard won in the North. Those responsible for this murder are enemies of progress, enemies of peace and enemies of Ireland. They must not be allowed to define the new Northern Ireland and undermine the work that so many people have done over so many years to build a better future.”
