Sligo Fianna Fáil Senator Marc Mac Sharry has called on the Government to establish a taskforce made up of State authorities and the management at Sligo Airport to secure the future continuity of commuter services.

Senator Mac Sharry was speaking after the Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar announced this evening that he is pulling all funding from Sligo Airport next year.

The local Senator commented, “I am deeply disappointed at the Government’s short-sighted decision to pull all State funding from Sligo Airport from next year. Air access is vital to the socioeconomic fabric of the northwest region. It is imperative to the marketability of the region for Foreign Direct Investment, to the support for indigenous industry, and in particularly to the growth of tourism to the region.

“For these reasons, it is essential that a taskforce be set up, bringing together representatives of the Department of Transport, the Department of Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation, IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, Failte Ireland and Sligo Airport management, to maximise interagency support to ensure the airport’s future contribution to the northwest region.”
