Fianna Fáil Tourism Spokesperson Timmy Dooley TD says Ireland’s inclusion in the Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel 2015’ is the result of the hard work of the Irish people, and the excellent initiatives implemented by Irish tourism bodies.
Deputy Dooley commented, “I want to pay tribute to people working within the tourism and hospitality industry for helping bring Ireland to the attention of the world for all the right reasons. The Lonely Planet is the go-to travel book for millions of tourists across the world, and its glowing report of the country in its latest edition should boost our profile and encourage more people to visit.
“Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland have been working tirelessly to come up with marketing drives and initiatives, and the huge success of the Wild Atlantic Way is paying off. The driving route was singled out for praise in the guidebook, which described the country as “stunningly scenic”. We must ensure that the progress which has been made in the industry is maintained and improved.
“Ordinary Irish people have played a huge role in encouraging people to take a trip here. The warmth and hospitality that is afforded to tourists is famed throughout the world, and is acknowledged and praised in this Lonely Planet list. This is a quality that cannot be underestimated and should be utilised and promoted.
“Tourism is one of our key industries. It is worth over €4bn every year and is essential to the rebuilding of our economy. The effort that has been invested into the sector by businesses, workers and interest groups is now bearing fruit and we need to ensure that this drive is nurtured and developed in order to guarantee continued success in this area into the future”.
