Laois Fianna Fáil TD Seán Fleming has called for the stand-off between Laois VEC and the Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) to be resolved immediately.
Deputy Fleming said: “This can be achieved by Laois VEC honouring in full the national teacher transfer agreement between the TUI and IVEA.
“This national agreement has been in place for 14 years and this is the first time that any local VEC has attempted to go outside this agreement.
“Laois VEC should immediately come back in line and implement this long standing national agreement. This has delivered industrial peace in relation to teacher transfers on a Last In-First Out basis.
“This matter was adjudicated on in the Labour Relations Commission last month and Laois VEC was instructed to go back and redo the teacher transfer process. Laois VEC claim to have done this but remarkably they came up with same answer. Clearly this is not what the LRC had in mind.
“The two teachers in question have taken up their new posts ‘under protest’ in Portarlington and in the Midlands Prison while this matter is being resolved.
“Now that we are well into the new school year Laois VEC should put the students and teachers first and resolve this situation satisfactorily as a matter of urgency.”
