Fianna Fáil TD for Laois Sean Fleming has said the recent housing announcement made by Minister Alan Kelly is lacking in detail and is not ambitious enough.
Deputy Fleming commented, “I welcome the recent housing announcement made by Minister Kelly, but it is long overdue. However it remains the case that there is simply not enough investment planned to tackle the growing waiting list for housing in Laois.
““The plan outlined by the Government is lacking in detail and is simply not ambitious enough. Most new housing units won’t become available until the end of 2017 at the very earliest. In the meantime the housing list in Laois continues to grow on a daily basis. The Government should be focusing on delivering housing in the immediate future rather than setting vague timelines.
“Fianna Fáil has been highlighting that housing lists have been growing rapidly right across the country over the last four years. Unfortunately the government has only decided to take action at this very late stage as a General Election is on the horizon.
“The Government made numerous announcements in advance of the local elections in May 2014 that remain unfulfilled. A repeat of this cannot be allowed this time around.
“The Government needs to take a reality check on this issue. Much more needs to be done to tackle the waiting list for housing in Laois. The announcement made by Minister Kelly is a start, but only just about.”
