Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Public Sector Reform Seán Fleming TD has described as “shocking” the reduction in the number of public servants promised over the lifetime of the Government.
Deputy Fleming said: “The figures announced by Minister Brendan Howlin that 41,400 public servants will have left the public service by the end of 2015 are higher than anyone could have expected.”
“Many public servants who may have voted for the Labour Party will be shocked to hear the extent of the cuts in employment in the public service that the Labour Party said they will deliver.
Many public servants are now let down by the Labour Party whom they thought would protect their jobs from the aggressive approach of Fine Gael.  We now find that Labour is agreeing to even more job cuts than even Fine Gael proposed.
“Everybody, including public servants, accepts the need for reform within the public sector.  However cuts to this extent will cause damage to service delivery without providing the necessary reforms.”
