Responding to the reports that Labour are now trying to position themselves for the forthcoming election, Fianna Fáil Frontbench Spokesperson Timmy Dooley said: “I find it extraordinary that members of the Labour party are so desperate to save themselves that they are calling for more to be done on rent regulation and the housing crisis when they are partners in government. Labour Ministers have sat in the Cabinet that made the decisions to cut the rent supplement and rent cap. These cuts were made by the Tánaiste in her own department where she has cut €1.8 billion from welfare supports.
“It is just sheer hypocrisy by Labour to try and distinguish themselves from government cuts. They have been in government for four years and supported Fine Gael in every single cut and it is far too late for Labour to rebuild the trust they have shattered with the electorate.”
Deputy Dooley added: “Labour is the party that promised not to cut child benefit and to burn bond holders yet when elected to government did the exact opposite. They are now grasping at straws to try and reinvent themselves when it is too late.”
